Advancements in Home Care Using Digital Pen and Paper Technology, PART ONE: Ensuring the quality of home services provided in Sweden  click to read more
sponsored by: Anoto Group
Presented by:
Liane Wallerstedt-Johansson
retired Director of Social Services and Healthcare Administration
Municipality of Solna, Sweden
Petter Ericson
Co-inventor of Digital Pen and Paper technology
Anoto AB, Sweden
While Director of Social Services for the municipality of Solna, a suburb of Stockholm, Ms. Wallerstedt-Johansson pioneered an HIM solution for visited home care of the elderly using Digital Pen and Paper, a solution that is now being implemented across Sweden with such success that other countries are observing the results.

She will speak about the conditions that urged her to create the "Mobipen Care" system, which allows home care workers to register the details and observations of every visit using a mobile digital pen on normal charts. This tutorial will cover how the Mobipen system records a contemporaneous account of the care provided on paper and incorporates it into the service’s computer records in one step, allowing care managers to spot trends and positively ensure procedures are being followed, and each patient is being cared for well. Petter Ericson, the co-inventor of the Digital Pen, will present the pros and cons of using this technology as a health IT solution, and will demonstrate its capabilities.

Advancements in Home Care Using Digital Pen and Paper Technology, PART TWO: Using wireless digital pens for real-time pain assessment in palliative home healthcare.  click to read more
sponsored by: Anoto Group
Presented by:
Leili Lind, PhD
Department of Biomedical Engineering/Medical Informatics, Linköping University, and Santa Anna IT Research Institute AB
Sweden
Petter Ericson
Co-inventor of digital pen and paper technology Anoto AB
Sweden
The increasing cost of long-term care has resulted in the exploration of ways to provide affordable, but very high quality, services for people being treated at home. In this tutorial Dr. Leili Lind will present about how her research group has developed a system which allows cancer patients subject to palliative home care to frequently and easily submit symptom assessments directly to the hospital in real time using a “pain diary” and wireless Digital Pen technology developed by Anoto. Four Swedish county councils will soon begin a pilot program based on this technology. Petter Ericsson, co-inventor of the Digital Pen, will present the pros and cons of using this technology as a Health IT solution, and will demonstrate its capabilities.

Presented by:
Anders Odgaard, MD
Consultant, Aarhus University Hospital
Systematic’s solution is a web based collection of tools for development, maintenance, sub-database subscription, and production use of clinical databases. The system is currently in use at a large university hospital in Denmark.

The presentation will illustrate how:
  • Graphical interfaces allow easy generation of databases.
  • The data sets required by national clinical databases are automatically uploaded to the national databases.
  • Data can be presented in simple graphics.
  • The solution is used for collection of quality, production, and administrative data.
  • Data hosting and report generation is offered.

Increasing patient safety with Columna Medication module  click to read more
sponsored by: Systematic A/S
Presented by:
Rikke Hogrebe, Nurse
The medical module of Systematic Columna has been implemented in the central Jutland region of Denmark for five years. Clinicians have experienced a marked improvement in the work processes and reduced medication errors, which has in turn led to greater patient security.

The benefits that the region hoped to realize included: A reduction of time spent on medication routines, a reduction of medication errors caused by handwritten documentation and the introduction of comprehensive cross-patient overviews.

To support the comprehensive cross-patient view, Columna uses data from the patients in the wards to make organizational views to support e.g. drug administration routines across patients.

Digital workflow for mammography screening purposes in Denmark  click to read more
sponsored by: Carestream
Presented by:
Ulf Andersson
Director Marketing & Business Development, Europe North, Carestream Health
Purpose:
Develop and fully utilise IT technology in a digital workflow to benefit mammography screening in Denmark. The project scope included the three regions of Sjealland, Hovedstaden and MidtJylland, representing more than 2/3 of the Danish population, and consisted of three elements:
  • Fulfilling European guidelines for mammography reading (double blind reading)
  • Improving booking and communication for breast screening participants
  • Productivity gains in workflow using the Carestream RIS Mammography Module
Methods and Materials:
Following a successful bid for Government funding, Ringsted Sygehus in the Sjaelland Region of Denmark initiated the development work with Carestream Health for a digital workflow module for mammography screening. Other radiologists and administration professionals from Hovedstaden and MidtJylland regions were also invited to participate to understand how the community can scale and take advantage of a digital workflow. Data captured was input into a Carestream Health research programme, resulting in development of a number of unique mammography RIS applications, including double blind reading functionality and customised order entry.

Results:
A double blind reading module for radiologists is running in a digital environment, fulfilling European guidelines. Productivity gains from the Carestream Health mammography module include remote reading capabilities, helping to utilise the shortage of expert mammography radiologists and an online portal that allows screening participants to directly cancel and reschedule appointments resulting in reduced administration.

The RIS can easily be configured to enable the extraction of statistical data for workflow analysis, evaluation and improved administration e.g. participation rates, number of detected carcinomas, tumour size, type of tumour, false positives and false negatives. The capability for real-time web conferencing also facilitates case discussions and is of particular benefit in achieving multiple radiologist consensus.

Conclusion:
In using the Carestream Health mammography module, the efficiency of mammography screening workflow has improved with the identification of commonalities and proven efficiency gains between regions. The improvements in administration and productivity will support the Danish government's strategy of full mammography screening across the country by the end of 2008.
