Satellite-linked Robot Performs Ultrasound from the Mediterranean Sea

11 August, 2008

Robot Ultrasounds at Sea

Thanks to a partnership between French group Robosoft and the European Mobile and Robotised Telechography (MARTE) project, the first ever satellite ultrasound was recently carried out in the Eastern Mediterranean. The technique used a remotely controlled Estele robot with a wireless handset, observed on a satellite television screen, to link Cyprus-based doctors to the patient. According to a spokesperson for the MARTE project, "The expertise of highly qualified radiologists, centralised in hospitals, will now be available to answer requests for remote ultrasound examinations, thus offering high-quality care to patients even in isolated areas."
